Dr. Perry describes how when the Tiger is awake the hippo goes under the water....

Children who experience a lot of trauma/violence/neglect have tigers that are light sleepers - a nervous system that is out of balance. This impacts learning, regulation, relationships and lowers self confidence. By "resetting" the nervous system with the Safe and Sound Protocol we give them back access to the Owl (higher thinking/cognitive processing). This leads to better regulation, communication, learning can now happen and self esteem improves. This can be very beneficial to any child/adolescent that has experienced trauma - those in foster care or adoption often have this type of exposure. This applies to adults with PTSD as well.
